Personal Narrative
Growing up I can remember wanting to be everything from a zoologist, doctor, office secretary to sports announcement. I was the fist member of my nuclear family to have the opportunity to go off and live the collegate lifestyle. Both of my parents chose to go the militant route as did one of my brothers. This just never seemed like and option for me.
Being from Ohio I chose to expand my horizons and set out west to attend Arizona State University. It is because of the generosity of my step-father that I was even able to obtain this goal. He has played a major influence in my life by just being a part of it from the age of 8 on. He was a young 24 when he met my mother who was divorced with my brother and I. He showed great courage by taking on my brother and I as his own and sticking around through the good and the bad.
I also owe my need to spread my wings to my mother. She has taught me to explore my options and never settle just because it seems o.k. The BIS program helped with my mothers advice by not settling on just one discipline that I had to major in.
My goals have changed a lot over my life time but one goal that has never changed is to make my family proud. The value stays the same but the process changes. My current goals are to stay on top of my academic plan and set reachable goals goals for myself. I have learned that organizing my day into lists of small goals has helped me to get me done in my day. My future most goal is to graduate in the summer of 2012. It has been a long journey but the experiences I have learned from have influenced me far more than any institution or organization.
